Iowasick

Dear all,

There is a big picture--a two-page spread--of the Hamburg Inn in the latest New Yorker. It is not labeled as such, but that is what it is. (It is actually a picture of Barack Obama campaigning there.)

I was just thinking of the Hamburg Inn II. We made pie shakes. Harder than you'd think.

The key to the pie shake, I believe, is to drop the pie in after the ice cream, etc, is already blended. You don't want to pulverize the pie completely, which is what we did. It was still good, but it didn't have those big hunks of crust that are such delicious surprises.

I'm weeping at the thought of a pie shake. Blueberry, peach. Must wear appropriate T-shirt today.

I think they also chop the pie into bite sized bits before adding it to the ice cream, thus avoiding the frozen-berry-crust-smoosh.

(I'm a little embarrassed that THIS is what it takes to get me posting here again).

Even our favorite diner in the E. Village can't compare. And I've actually been plotting to put maple syrup in my purse to bring there since they only have that fake corn syrup crap.

Oh Hamburg. I too shall wear my tshirt this week.
