I am having the problem of understanding this problem from the perspective of the uninformed and apartment-bound-by-choice consumer.
Would the knowledge that the writer is signing the book as I am standing there be the sole attraction?
Because, then wouldn't it be the same thing if I too was represented by some sort of stylus contraption? A bionic mouth, let's say, that can be controlled by cheap Atari joysticks from the comfort of my own entertainment center? "Make this one out to Honey."
